365 films in 2016: film 46 (The Master 2012)

Screen Shot 2016-03-05 at 22.02.09The Master is an odd film, and i don’t really know how i feel about it. People tend to be very divided on The Master, and in my opinion it’s kind of just a big mess. I’ve seen people say this is PTA’s best film and people say it’s one of his worst, which kind of reflects the film really.

The Master runs around the room for two and a half hours shouting look at this and look at that, and this too isn’t this weird and cool? it doesn’t really work. For the most part The Master feels like a disjointed mess, things happen that should be important to the story but end up fading away leaving you disappointed. This is such a shame because this film has so much potential, Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman both give incredible performances in the film and the 70mm long takes are really fantastic, beautifully shot segments but these things can’t undo the masters biggest flaw, its story. The master feels like it has no story, we know that these two men are looking for fulfilment in each other but that’s it really, The Master drags you along looking for a story the same way it drags freddie along looking for solace, and with all the character development in The master the film ends up feeling incredibly hollow.

The master was a disappointment to me, being a fan of Anderson’s work it’s a shame to see a project of his fall flat on its face, The Master could have been a fantastic film if it focused less on unneeded character development and more on its story. 5/10.
