365 films in 2016: film 33 (The Truman Show 1998)

TMSThe Truman Show is a fantastically shot film, it’s rare to see a film where a cinematographer will frame things in a way that will make them look outdated and almost cartoon like, but for some reason it works for The Truman Show, for the first act or so it really does feel like you’re watching an I Love Lucy style old school tv show, which is of course intentional, i think the way this film is shot really makes this film for me, the over saturated, goody-good style that reminds you of something like Edward Scissorhands is The Truman Show.

Jim Carrey also delivers a solid performance as the starring role but he didn’t blow me away, something about The Truman Show just feels kind of vacant and empty, the film feels like it ends just as it begins to make some progress, you don’t really care about any of the characters except Truman, and his overly forced love interest serves almost no purpose in the story, an extra 45 minutes to an hour would have really done The Truman Show a lot of good, but that by no means this is a bad film, The Truman Show is a solid movie with a few grey miss-steps, The Truman Show is a 7/10.

In 2016 i will be watching 365 films (yes, i know there are 366 days this year) and writing about how I felt about them, I decided to do this just because over the last year or so i’ve Sort of pulled away from film and I wanna start to enjoy watching movies again. This will normally be just notes I made or thoughts I have about the film.
