365 films in 2016: film 29 (Kanye West – The Life Of Pablo/ Yeezy Season 3 stream 2016)

Kanye West is probably of my favourite artists of all time so when his new album The Life Of Pablo (formerly known as So Help Me God, Swish and Waves) was finally announced, after the 3 years of supposed leaked info and fake track listings I was obviously excited.

The name which annoyed many (including me initially) comes from both Pablo Picasso and Pablo Escobar, when he’s designing clothes and shoes he feels like Picasso, when he’s in the news being portrayed as a villain constantly by right wing media he feels like Escobar (inb4 this is based of speculation so don’t quote me on that). Which is a cool title but I still think so help be god had a more grandiose aggressive feel to it that fit the album a lot more but hey we haven’t heard the actual album yet, what was in the stream was just demos. Now onto the important part, the music.

Production wise The Life Of Pablo is Kanye’s most sonically diverse and interesting album, there was definitely a strong industrial and gospel influence behind the production of this album, some of the beats would feel right at home on one of the more aggressive 90s Nine Inch Nails albums which I personally love. Kanye’s verses themselves however do not live up to his production, he’s always been a better producer than rapper but a lot of the lyrics here feel like they should have been throwaways, Kanye’s name dropping of current events feel like they’re going to date the album heavily in a few years time the way he’s lyrics about Pyrex on Yeezus do now and his lines about his penis kind of made everyone in the cinema cringe, so I’m hoping these are actually throwaway lyrics and get replaced in the final product (after all Kanye is notorious for having several different versions of his songs saved up).

My biggest problem with the album was the change to the final track Wolves, ever since Kanye debuted the song live people have been begging for a studio version and even trying to clean up the live version to make it sound closer to a CDQ, but unfortunately Wolves is not what we thought it would be, Kanye replaces Sia and Vic Mensa’s amazing performances with a verse about unfollowing and unswollowing, which if you know the original story behind Wolves just makes whole thing leave a bad taste in your mouth, it’s not all bad though, Frank Ocean returns from his several month disappearance to deliver a fairly decent final verse on the track, which as you’d imagine shocked everyone watching. Personally I loved The Life Of Pablo stream, there’s a lot of interesting things Kanye try’s on the album and the slight Young Thug influence on some of the tracks works perfectly with some of the more aggressive beats, I can’t wait till the album releases in its final form.

The Yeezy season 3 show was also fantastic, it felt more like performance art than a fashion show (I know right) but it was great to watch, I would have preferred a more traditional runway show to showcase the garments better but that’s just personal preference. My favourite pieces from the collection were the silver jacket, the side ribbed sweatpants, the silver multi material sweatpants and the chunky knit sweater.

These pieces are a lot more interesting than some of the pieces in the first two collections and I’d really love to see how these are going to look when styled differently, obviously there is a big Helmut Lang influence once again but Kanye manages to make this one feel more like his own collection. Personally I enjoyed the womenswear collection a lot more than the men’s, the designs felt a lot more refreshing and diverse than with a captivating blend of colours, fabrics and designs. I wasn’t particularly blown away by the footwear but it was a nice touch to see some changes made to the existing Yeezy models instead of just a few new colours, however Season 3 is without a doubt Kanye’s most successful and visually stimulating collection to date and it’s going to be really interesting to see where he goes from here. The Life Of Pablo/ Yeezy season 3 stream was a definite 8/10.

In 2016 i will be watching 365 films (yes, i know there are 366 days this year) and writing about how I felt about them, I decided to do this just because over the last year or so i’ve Sort of pulled away from film and I wanna start to enjoy watching movies again. This will normally be just notes I made or thoughts I have about the film.
