Dark City kind of sums up the 90s in terms of weird sci-fi/ noir movies, it try’s to do so much and does so bad with all of it, Dark City feels like it was made by a film student that wants to show off that he knows how to do a handful of techniques and it gets very annoying very fast.
The characters conversations in the film are almost exclusively to hold the viewer’s hand thought out the ENTIRE movie, you can pretty much guess how the film is gonna end after the first 30 minutes right down to the twist at the end, if you can call it a twist. The ending by the way is exactly what you’d expect from a film like this, very safe, very family friendly, very boring. I think what dates this film the most are the shots and cgi/ effects, some of the cinematography just makes you cringe and try to remember when the last time you saw something like that and the cgi is, well it’s late 90s cgi so it’s exactly what you’d expect.
I didn’t really hate this film, even though it sounds like I did, I did really like some of the performances, they are probably the more redeeming factors of Dark City, but no amount of decent acting from 1 or 2 actors can make up for a boring script and dull characters, you don’t care what happens to any of these people, they’re hollow and bland, the biggest crime Dark City’s commits however is being pretentious, this mishmash of interesting concepts and genre blending could have been so good, but unfortunately it’s not. Dark City strings together a bunch of annoying Hollywood tropes and cliches and turns them into a film you’d watch on a date night with your wife after having dinner at the restaurant you go to every week ordering the same meal and then getting home in time to be in bed by 9 o’clock. Dark City is a 4/10.
In 2016 i will be watching 365 films (yes, i know there are 366 days this year) and writing about how I felt about them, I decided to do this just because over the last year or so i’ve Sort of pulled away from film and I wanna start to enjoy watching movies again. This will normally be just notes I made or thoughts I have about the film.
